Alisa Valevskaya

b.1997 / Ural, Sverdlovsk-45
I draw inspiration from the imagery of global mythology and folklore. I connect the themes and ideas that moved people across different eras with deconstructed fragments of my own past and present. Placing them into the context of real life, I give them new, more personal meaning. This process allows me—as someone living in the present—not to get lost in the cold abstractions of modernity, but to remain part of a vast, living history of thought and emotion.
My work explores how everyday utilitarian objects from the past acquire sacred meaning in the minds of people today, carrying with them a unique layer of cultural memory. The dialogue between past and future is a reunion of the seemingly incompatible. It becomes possible through a paradoxical—but deeply human—fusion of the object’s material presence and its symbolic resonance.
Humans tend to assign sacred, and at times even taboo, significance to the things around them. These meanings endure, linking generations and eras. And it is the mundane objects—those closest to our daily lives—that are best suited for this kind of dialogue.
